JOHANNES MEINTJES
'Night Rain (in Cape Town)', 1943
 
Upon completion of his studies, Meintjes moved to Johannesburg to assist Gerrit Bakker with his new bookshop. Executed a week after he turned twenty, this oil painting is one of Meintjes' very first and this is the only Meintjes painting ever owned by Gerrit Bakker. Meintjes refers to painting this work on page 51 of his first diary ('Dagboek 1'); inscription made on 26 May 1943.

Florence Zerffi was Johannes Meintjes' first art teacher and this is an important work for purposes of comparison. (Refer to 'gallery' section 1946-1950 which clearly demonstrates Meintjes' departure from the traditional, academic school as represented by this painting).
